NT Server Structure

To manage an NT Virtual server all you need to do is type http://www.domain/stats.

This will bring up a menu with options to setup e-mail accounts and manage logs and statistics.

All servers come pre-configured with the latest version of Microsoft Frontpage extensions and with FTP access so that you can upload your pages.

Here is a typical directory structure:

drwxr-xr-x 1 User Group 0 Sep 3 02:40 anonftp
drwxr-xr-x 1 User Group 0 Sep 3 00:16 cgi-src
drwxr-xr-x 1 User Group 0 Sep 3 00:16 cgi-win
drwxr-xr-x 1 User Group 0 Sep 3 00:17 htdocs
drwxr-xr-x 1 User Group 0 Sep 3 00:16 imail
drwxr-xr-x 1 User Group 0 Sep 3 00:17 logs
drwxr-xr-x 1 User Group 0 Sep 3 00:16 stats

The anonftp is the directory for the Anonymous FTP server.  Files that are uploaded on this directory will be visible to any user that types ftp://domain from any browser connected to the Internet.  This is used to distribute files and programs to the general public.

The cgi-src directory is used to place libraries that certain programs might need. It's not used very often.

The cgi-win is a special directory to place cgi-scripts in. Cgi-scripts are small programs that handle certain tasks like mailing forms, guest books, chat rooms, and even databases. You can create very complex cgi scripts and place them in the cgi-win directory or in the standard cgi-bin located within the htdocs directory.

The htdocs directory is where all your images and .html pages go.  This is the only section that browsers can see.  It's the directory where all the website information needs to be uploaded.  If you use Microsoft Frontpage, the server will automatically place you in this directory.

The iMail directory is where all the mail accounts are.  This is the mail server directory.  This directory should not be touched.

The logs directory is where the server's logs are.  Every time someone visits your website, a log is generated and recorded in a special file within the logs directory. This log file is used by Webtrends to give you very comprehensive reports of your website effectiveness. This directory should not be touched either.

The stats directory is what you get when you type /stats on your webserver.  This directory contains the .html and graphics that make up the remote management system to manage your server.  If you wish to edit the way the /remote feature looks like, you are welcome to edit these pages to fit your needs.
